Next Dragon Age Inspired by Skyrim

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim has taken the gaming world by storm with its patented blend of roleplaying and open world exploration, garnering tons of game of the year awards as well as commercial success. In contrast, BioWare’s Dragon Age II met lukewarm reviews and plenty of fan backlash, so it’s no wonder that the latter game series is attempting to take cues from the former for its next big title.

In an interview with Wired.com, BioWare CEO Dr. Ray Muzyka said that the company is looking to correct many of the mistakes it made in Dragon Age: Origins‘ sequel for a future franchise entry. One of the ways the RPG studio plans to accomplish this is by looking to current popular games for inspiration, most notably games like Skyrim:

(The next Dragon Age) is gonna have the best of features from the prior Dragon Age games, but it's also gonna have a lot of things I think players are gonna find compelling from some of the games that are out now that are doing really well with more of an open world feel. We're checking (Skyrim) out aggressively. We like it. We're big admirers of (Bethesda) and the product. We think we can do some wonderful things.Dr. Ray Muzyka, BioWare CEO

In addition, Muzyka admitted that the company’s most recent game in the Dragon Age series was polarizing and that not every change sat well with the playerbase, specifically anemic party member management. Dragon Age III or another series entry has not yet been officially confirmed by BioWare, but all signs point to its being in BioWare’s lineup. Muzyka teased series fans as well, saying, “I’ve seen something in the last couple of weeks that is really the future of that franchise that is so compelling, I am so looking forward to being able to announce it.” Whatever it is, we hope it takes the series back in the right direction.
