Direct2Drive Becomes Part of GameFly

That other PC gaming download service, Direct2Drive, will be lumped in with GameFly starting in January as GameFly expands its PC and Mac download business. As D2D shuts down, users will begin to be directed over to GameFly’s website and download client as soon as the transition is complete. What’s still up in the air is what exactly will happen to users’ games that GameFly doesn’t currently support, so D2D advises all account holders to download all their files before the site closes for good.

We do know that all non-game files, including Prima Guides, will not be supported by the new system, so if you’ve got anything of that nature loaded onto your D2D account, save it now. As for titles that aren’t available right away, Direct2Drive claims that “any D2D titles not immediately available should become available shortly thereafter.” On the plus side, GameFly subscribers are gaining unlimited access to hundreds of PC titles in addition to the physical rental benefits of membership.

As D2D begins to be assimilated, it will be interesting to see whether competing gaming services such as GamersGate and Steam gain any uptick in account signups and game sales. In the meantime, any of you D2D loyalists ought to download your games to be safe.
