Modern Warfare 3 Gets New Game Modes

Infinity Ward today updated Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 to support three new game types: Drop Zone, Hardcore Ricochet, and Hardcore HQ Ricochet. Drop Zone will start to appear in playlists over the weekend, while the Ricochet modes should start popping up today. In addition, IW has added Community Playlists, a feature that will allow public players to join up on select “popular or unique private match modes” while still gaining experience and ranking up.

As for the new modes, Drop Zone is a kind of king-of-the-hill experience with a twist: a care package will drop for the team that owns the “zone” every 15 seconds. All other air support and pointstreaks are entirely disabled, meaning the only way to get those precious strikes is by hanging onto the Drop Zone for dear life.

The “Ricochet” label is IW’s response to team-killing in the friendly-fire Hardcore modes. Taking an interesting approach to solving the problem, Infinity Ward’s decided to apply all friendly fire damage to the attacker rather than the victim, so that shooting a friend may result in your own death. Yeah, that’ll probably stop most griefers in their tracks. In addition to the new game types, IW claims the latest update will fix ongoing host disadvantage and lag compensation problems.
