South Park Videogame Gets More Details

Last week, it was announced that South Park would once again be transformed into a videogame, but with a few key differences from the lackluster 1998 release. First, this announcement comes at the peak of show creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s incredible success with The Book of Mormon and a long line of additional work in film, television, and beyond to corroborate the success of their original Comedy Central series. So, this time, we know they mean business. Second, the series would be adapted into a “full scale RPG,” rather than a reskinned shooter based on the Turok engine. And finally, the game would be developed by industry stalwarts THQ and Obsidian Entertainment, developers of some of the most acclaimed RPGs of recent gaming history.
Details have been scarce since Game Informer first revealed the new IP, but now more on the gameplay and story have begun to surface.
Rather than putting the player in control of one of the show’s four central characters–Stan, Kyle, Kenny, or Cartman–the game begins by assuming the role of a silent new kid in town. As the story opens, you participate in a live-action role-playing (LARP) game that, in standard South Park form, leads to unforeseen consequences.
So far, four of the five character classes have been confirmed–wizard, rogue, adventurer, paladin–while a fifth “unconventional” class remains unknown. And while the visuals will be 2D and the combat will be managed through turn-based gameplay, players will organized and accessed information through the character’s smartphone, not unlike the Fallout: New Vegas pip-boy.
Additional standard RPG features such as weapon augmentations and character summons will also be available. How many of these will be based on racist, sexist, scatological or otherwise offensive but surprisingly funny humor are yet to be determined.
