With the Video Game Awards coming up in less than a week, many AAA developers are driving gamers to the brink of madness with teasing hints about new franchises and potential sequels. Epic Games has been no exception, offering up a teaser earlier this week featuring Cliff Bleszinski (the designer formerly known as CliffyB) promised a “big announcement” for an “entirely fresh, new experience” from the North Carolina-based development studio.

Now in an exclusive interview with GamesIndustry.biz, Epic’s President Mike Capps commented that their new IP is ”radically different” for the developer. ”This is going to be one of those projects where we try something totally different,” Capps said, “and it just went ‘boom,’ because everyone had this pent up energy to do something new.” The release of Gears of War 3 earlier this year was a capstone for the company’s legacy with gritty, ultra-violent science fiction, complete with two of gaming’s most popular characters in recent history, the hulking totems of flesh known as Marcus and Dom. And while the next Gears installment has been rumored, company officials have also reported that they have no less than five games currently in development, and have been experimenting with new lead designers to give the developer more perspectives for its new directions.

At the same time, Capps was not too eager to abandon the company’s roots. “I can’t wait for [the team] to get back to something like Gears in the future,” he continued, “because it’s sort of our bread and butter, and they’re going to be more energized for it.”
