Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 was released earlier this week to massive sales figures, critical acclaim, and some nagging user reviews. Figures were so massive, in fact, that I reported just two days ago that Modern Warfare 3′s publisher were anticipating breaking the industry sales record set last year by another Call of Duty game, Black Ops. Well, it’s been less than a week, and the numbers are in. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 not only surpassed Black Ops in sales, it also established a first-time historical record in the entire entertainment industry. Let’s break down the numbers:
Number of copies of Modern Warfare 3 sold in first 24 hours in North America and UK: 6.5 million.
Total estimated value of sales in first 24 hours in UK and US alone: $400 million.
Total number of copies sold in the UK and US per second: 75.
Increase in number of copies sold in first 24 hours since the release of Black Ops: 0.9 million.
Number of years in a row Call of Duty titles have set day one launch records: 3.
Number of times that has happened before: 0.
Number of copies of Battlefield 3 sold in “a matter of days”: 5 million.
Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick was not eager to downplay this achievement. “We believe the launch of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is the biggest entertainment launch of all time in any medium,” he commented on the release, “and we achieved this record with sales from only two territories.”
“Other than Call of Duty, there has never been another entertainment franchise that has set opening day records three years in a row. Life-to-date sales for the Call of Duty franchise exceed worldwide theatrical box office for Star Wars and Lord of the Rings, two of the most successful entertainment franchises of all time.”
“Call of Duty is more than a game,” Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg added, attributing Modern Warfare 3‘s success to the game’s ability to transcend genre and medium-defining expectations. “It’s become a major part of the pop cultural landscape. It is a game that core enthusiasts love, but that also consistently draws new people into the medium. It is the most intense, adrenaline pumping entertainment experience anywhere.”
“I would like to thank our incredible teams at Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games for making a brilliant game,” he concluded. “But most of all, I would like to thank our millions of passionate fans worldwide. We made this game for you.”
