Winter is coming–and that means a flood of games is headed your way. From a multi-billion dollar shooter franchise to assassination simulators to 2D co-op platformers, there’s quite the variety of AAA content hitting the market this month. As your wallets tremble in fear, peruse this list of the high-profile games to watch out for in November.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
![]() | November 8, 2011 | PC, PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, DS, Toasters What Activision is heralding as the most anticipated game in history--a claim backed up by over 3.5 million pre-orders so far--Modern Warfare 3 is set to bring loud shooting to the masses once again. Turning away from last year's massively successful Cold War setting to return to the favorite Modern Warfare storyline, the game features a loud single-player campaign with guns and shooting. There is also the wildly popular multiplayer mode, including Spec Ops, Survival, and the usual range of adversarial modes. It is also rumored to have guns and shooting. Not that there's anything wrong with that! I'll be there day one, chugging down my Call of Duty MW3 Mountain Dew Game Fuel as I defend the free world. |
Assassin's Creed: Revelations
![]() | November 15, 2011 | PC, PS3, Xbox 360 A continuation of the popular franchise centering around the use of spiffy sci-fi technology to access ancestors' memories and kill people, Revelations will try to up the ante. Adding a grappling hook-like hookblade and a craftable bomb system, the game has fully featured singleplayer as well as multiplayer game modes. While the singleplayer will focus on the three previous protagonists, the competitive mode will include a persistent level-up system, capture-the-flag, and fully customizable avatars and character appearances. No word on whether conspiratorial multiple-angle grassy knoll assassinations will be supported. |
Saint's Row The Third
![]() | November 15, 2011 | PC, PS3, Xbox 360 The world's most popular sandbox city driving game that is not Grand Theft Auto drops its third entry this month. Rounding out an absolutely packed November 15th release date, the game will continue the storyline from Saint's Row 2 with a more robust set of branching storylines and missions. An experience points system has been added this time around, and full two-player co-op is included as before. Though no competitive multiplayer options will be available this time around, Volition's time has been poured into making the game as over-the-top crazy as possible. |
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
![]() | November 11, 2011 | PC, PS3, Xbox 360 I do feel bad for a lot of the games coming out after the eleventh of the month, not necessarily because they won't sell well but because The Elder Scrolls has been known to suck up gamers' time like a Hoover. Introducing massive, epic, infinite dragons to the RPG series and depicting the region of Skyrim--obviously--ESV will be tweaking the series' gameplay formula while still hoping to stay true to the core fanbase of the franchise. Shunning the more closed-down class system of earlier games, Skryim will let players level skills as they become more valuable. As long as I can loot and pillage with a Redguard I'll be a happy camper. |
Uncharted 3
![]() | November 1, 2011 | PS3 Following the continuing exploits of one Nathan Drake, Uncharted 3 is the big PlayStation 3 action title of the season. And it's already out! Offering both a frenetic, edge-of-your-seat, treasure-hunting singleplayer story as well as myriad multiplayer options, the most recent game in the highly acclaimed franchise is focused on making everything bigger and better. If Skyrim is aiming to fulfill all our open-world exploration desires, Uncharted 3 hopes to scratch that mostly linear third-person adventure game itch for Sony console owners. This one looks to be as gorgeous, loud, and thrilling as ever. |
The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword
![]() | November 20, 2011 | Wii The first home console Zelda game in five years, Skyward Sword looks to bring quite a few new innovations to the franchise while maintaining that classic Zelda gameplay Nintendo fans love. From a revamped dungeon/overworld structure, to a brand new airborne setting and steed, to full-blown Motion Plus support for tactical combat options, the new game brings a lot to the table. Finding a middle ground between Twilight Princess' psuedo-realistic graphics and Wind Wakers' cel-shaded beauty, Skyward Sword tells an origin story of Hyrule in a unique, impressionistic style. It's also something of a swan song for the waning Nintendo Wii. |
Need for Speed: The Run
![]() | November 15, 2011 | PC, PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, 3DS The eighteenth NFS game to be released, Need for Speed: The Run brings both speeding and running to the franchise, appropriately enough. Introducing quick time events during all-new on-foot gameplay sections, the game will focus on developing characters and a storyline more than other games in the series have. Underneath its pretty surface is Frostbite 2 of Battlefield 3 fame, providing the eye candy adorning its speedy, running action. You also get to drive and race cars throughout the game, in both singleplayer and multiplayer challenges. |
Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary
![]() | November 15, 2011 | Xbox 360 Providing nostalgic thrills for gamers weened on the original Xbox, Anniversary puts players through the epic battle for the first Halo with a fresh coat of paint. In addition to the redone graphics, 343 has beefed the game up to take advantage of the 360's online capabilities, adding achievements and online co-op. A full competitive multiplayer mode built on Halo: Reach's engine has been developed, including both original and revamped versions of classic Halo battlegrounds. This one should be a surefire hit with Halo junkies looking to relive sleepless dorm room nights. |
Super Mario 3D Land
![]() | November 13, 2011 | 3DS Yay, the 3DS is finally getting some games! Drawing lots of inspiration from both the Super Mario Galaxy series as well as classic NES game Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario 3D Land marks the triumphant return of the Tanooki Suit and the P-Wing. Utilizing fully 3D graphics as well as stereoscopic capabilities to enhance depth perception, the game will play out like a traditional Mario title while still incorporating the advancements Nintendo has made with the 3D entries in the franchise. November 13th will tell us how well they've pulled it off. |
Metal Gear Solid HD Collection
![]() | November 8, 2011 | PS3, Xbox 360 Bringing five much-loved games of the Metal Gear franchise to current HD technical standards, this collection includes Metal Gear, Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. Implementing a few new upgrades like the enhanced resolution and file-transferring capabilities between the PlayStation 3 and the PSP, the collection also will bring revamped controls and 60 fps support for the entire set of games. If you're not the Halo type, perhaps this is the remaster for you in November. |
Phew! November is absolutely jam-packed with games. We didn’t even have time to mention Rayman: Origins and Sonic Generations, among others. What are you buying this month?
