Games of the Month: October
By Kyle Mann | October 3, 2011 | Features | 1 comment | Share
Fall is here! You know what that means: winter is coming, and with it holiday gaming overload. October is just the tip of the iceberg for all the AAA and indie games we can possibly handle. So is there anything important coming this month? Anything you might want to play? Maybe something the beta version of which has been keeping you up into the wee morning hours for the past week or so? No? Can’t think of anything? Well then read on and see if any of these games ring a bell, then drop us a line in the comments letting us know which of these–or any game at all–you’ll be getting this month.
Battlefield 3
![]() | October 25, 2011 | PC, PS3, Xbox 360 Here's a little game you may have heard of, possibly, maybe. Battlefield 3's talked a big game, many of you have participated in the open beta, and now it's time for DICE to show us the finished product. The game depicts a modern day conflict in both singleplayer and 64- or 24-player multiplayer matches, depending on your platform of choice. And, more importantly, it has jets. We know it's been a long wait, but you'll just have to hold out another three weeks to get your grubby paws on the shooter extravaganza. In the meantime, why don't you check out our writeup on the history of the franchise, drool over the latest trailer and screenshots, or else watch our detailed gameplay analysis at the links below. |
Batman: Arkham City
![]() | October 18, 2011 | PC, PS3, Xbox 360 If you haven't gotten the memo yet, Batman games are good again. Last year's Arkham Asylum was a big hit and a successful blend of beat-em-up, RPG-lite, and stealth gameplay. Rocksteady's trying to follow up their success with the bigger, badder sequel, set in a spooky, isolated section of Gotham known as Arkham City. Set to include even more unlockables and tucked-away secrets than even the first game, the second entry in the franchise should provide fans of the first game with even more batty action. While the PC version has been delayed until November, console owners will be able to enjoy this one starting October 18. |
Forza Motorsport 4
![]() | October 11, 2011 | Xbox 360 The best Xbox-exclusive racing quasi-simulator around, and a worthy competitor to the Gran Turismo series, the fourth edition of Forza Motorsport will arrive smack in the middle of this month, bringing with it brand new features like Kinect-enabled head tracking and adaptive difficulty. Additionally, the game is set to support Forza 3 file imports and advanced car-viewing features and photography, also using Kinect. It'll be a good day for Xbox racing fans indeed. You'll also get to shout at your television using Kinect's microphone. No word on whether cursing at other drivers is supported. |
Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One
![]() | October 18, 2011 | PlayStation 3 What do you get when you mix Ratchet & Clank's patented blend of action, platforming, and cheeky humor with four-player co-op? I don't know, but we'll all find out on the 18th. All 4 One is a co-operative action-adventure game developed by series creator Insomniac, and it's shaping up nicely. PlayStation Plus members have had access to the beta for some time, but the rest of us will have to wait. Implementing co-operative elements like revives and teamwork-oriented boss fights and objectives, All 4 One is all set to bring the laughs to multiplayer. |
Might & Magic Heroes VI
![]() | October 13, 2011 | PC Heroes of Might & Magic has been a staple of PC gaming for a decade and a half, offering a turn-based spin on the now-defunct roleplaying series. The latest core entry in the franchise, Heroes VI is set to bring some big changes to the series. Slashing the number of resources from 7 to just 4 and revamping the leveling and spell system, the game has been in open beta since June but won't be available to the rest of us peasants until the 13th of this month. A full story-driven campaign and multiplayer modes will be included. |

Battlefield 3, Batman: Arkham City and Forza Motorsport 4..!? My wallet is cowering in fear right now :( And so is my free time.
